this past weekend drew, bree, and i (along with my mom and dad and kelly’s mom and dad!) took a little road trip to calgary to watch my sister and bother-in-law compete in their first ever 1/2 IronMan. WOW!
what is an IronMan you might ask. it is “the world’s most prestigious one-day endurance event”. in the IronMan 70.3 (the 1/2) athletes begin with a 1.9 km swim, move on to a 90 km bike, and then end with a 21km run (that is a half marathon!). isn’t that incredible?! my sister began her race at 6:30am with kelly’s age group starting about 15 minutes later. with miss bree in tow and a hotel room to pack i didn’t make it to the swim or get to see the bike. drew, bree, and i arrived to watch the bike transition and cheer them on during the run. eeeeek! it was so exciting. seeing abby and then kelly race in on their bikes and through their transition to their run was thrilling. then, we found a great location and got to see them twice on their run.
abby and kelly have been training for this for months and it was an inspiring and incredible thing to watch and be a part of. i am so proud of both abby and kelly. their commitment and athletic ability is something to admire and aspire to. they are taking a brief two week break from training (although on the way home from calgary they were overheard talking about their next run!!) and will then be resuming training for a FULL IronMan in arizona in november.
here is miss abby right at the end of the bike portion! i love that it looks like she is smiling and that woman is yelling at her.

abigail. 341.

here she is transitioning. both kelly and abby couldn’t stop complimenting the volunteers at the race. abby especially loved this lady who helped her!

i love this one! she was yelling something to me…

now here comes kelly! can you say quads?!

almost ready to take off and start his 1/2 marathon run!

here is ab at about 18km. easy peasy;-)

kelly at 18km.

miss abby crossing the finish line!! i love how she doesn’t even look very tired. she has only been working out for 6 hours STRAIGHT!

i didn’t manage to catch kelly’s finish but i did get these sweet moments of them after the race! awwwwww. i love how the mans arm is blocking their pda in the second one.

miss bree had to make a cameo! the skeeters were CRAZY so she had to stay in here to cheer on her auntie and uncle! she had lots of fun and was so proud of abby and kelly too.

changed and ready to do it again?!

what an amazing event to watch. i couldn’t be more proud of my little sister. her and kelly are truly amazing athletes!!
i hope we get to go cheer them on in AZ this fall and watch them become IronMen!!
